STEP 15 OF 67 · YOU ARE THE ENVIRONMENT ARTIST
Build a blockout test level
A blockout is the level made from plain boxes. You settle room sizes, door widths, jump distances and routes now, while changing them costs nothing.
How to do it
- Use plain boxes for walls, floors, stairs and cover.
- Walk every route with the character and fix anything too tight or too far.
- Upload a screenshot of the blockout from above and one from the player's view.
How AI speeds this up
With Unreal 5.8's experimental MCP plugin, an AI assistant can place blockout boxes from your description. You adjust them by hand.
Example from a sample game
Ashfall: Ember Gate as gray boxes. Gate, courtyard, watchtower, tunnel exit.
