STEP 3 OF 67 · YOU ARE THE DIRECTOR AND DESIGNER

Choose the first release's scope

Decide the platform, single-player or multiplayer, camera and length. Multiplayer changes how every system and save works, so it is decided now, not later.

How to do it

  1. Pick the camera and platform.
  2. Decide single-player or multiplayer. Duke recommends single-player PC first.
  3. Estimate how long the first release takes to play.
How AI speeds this up

Ask Duke whether your scope fits one person, and what to cut if it does not.

Example from a sample game

Ashfall: single-player, Windows PC, third-person, about 6 hours for the first release.

Before you move on

In Duke Forger, this step's gate checks:

Words to know

Scope
How much the game includes. Keeping scope realistic is the number one reason solo games get finished.
Multiplayer
More than one player in the same game over a network. It affects every system, so it is decided early.
Do step 3 on your own game

Free: Phase 1 is included on every plan. Duke drafts it with you and checks it before step 4 opens.
