STEP 49 OF 67 · YOU ARE THE WRITER

Decide who speaks which language, and how

Keep the main story hand-written. Use AI for side characters, small talk and barks, each limited to what that character should know.

How to do it

  1. Mark which characters use live AI and which use written lines.
  2. Write each AI character's limits: what it knows and must never say.
  3. Live AI conversation: Convai covers dialogue, voice and memory with an Unreal plugin.
  4. Keep replies under about 0.8 seconds or they feel like a stall.
How AI speeds this up

Draft with Duke writes a starting plan for which characters use live AI, and their limits, for you to edit.

Example from a sample game

Ashfall: story cast written by hand; 40 market vendors use live AI in Common and Veyl-tongue.

Before you move on

In Duke Forger, this step's gate checks:

Words to know

Bark
A short line an NPC says on its own, like "Watch it!" or "Fresh bread here!"
Language model
The kind of AI that writes text and holds conversations (LLM), used here for NPC dialogue.
Latency
The delay between asking for something and getting it, such as an NPC answering you.
Do step 49 on your own game

Included in Creator, Academy and Studio. Duke drafts it with you and checks it before step 50 opens.
