STEP 64 OF 67 · YOU ARE THE TECHNICAL ARTIST
Measure and fix performance
Pick a target frame rate and a minimum PC. Unreal Insights shows what costs time; fix the real bottleneck, then measure again.
How to do it
- Profile with Unreal Insights on the target PC.
- Fix the real bottleneck: heavy materials, too many active NPCs, texture memory, effects.
- Lumen's medium-quality mode in 5.8 helps lower-end PCs.
How AI speeds this up
Paste your profiling notes into Ask Duke for the likeliest fix.
Example from a sample game
Ashfall: crowd LOD distance halved, 48 fps to 64 fps.

Words to know
- Frame rate
- How many images the game draws per second (fps). 60 fps feels smooth; under 30 feels choppy.
- Profiling
- Measuring exactly what takes time in each frame, using tools like Unreal Insights.
- Bottleneck
- The one thing slowing the game down the most. Fixing anything else barely helps.
